My long-time friend and colleague, Dave Butler, just won an award from Denver's Westword magazine/blog for "Best Booze Blog" in their 2012 Denver Web Awards.

Dav'e blog, Fermentedly Challenged, is about craft beer in Colorado and he has a large, loyal following.

Dave helped get me started doing Web sites back in 1995, and we worked together at HP in Greeley back in the 80's and 90's.  Our wive's worked on the same hospital floor, his daughter was born a week after my daughter, we lived in the same neighborhood for ten years - Dave and I have remained pretty good friends.

One of the things Dave has done is take his passions and turned them into hobbies that pay.  He has started (and sold) a web development business, started several websites and usually is at the leading edge of most things Web.  One of Dave's passions is sampling craft and home-made beers, and he travels the state looking for what is good and interesting in the craft brewing marketplace.

Dave makes the time almost every day to cultivate his sources and blog something newsworthy to his target audience.

But that is not what I am writing about today.

If you follow the Westword link above, you will see 20+ different website and Twitter feedss that focus on social media that voters tweeted as best in their category.

Each has a lesson to teach us about how to do social media well.  Some are more "corporate", like the Colorado Rockies baseball team, and some are more personal like Olympic Champion/high Schooler Missy Franklin's Twitter feed.

If you have a passion which is your business, non-profit, or personal obsession, you can turn it into something social that helps connect you to your target audience.

Here are a couple more award winners that I think make for good examples.

Grace(full) Plate - a Food blog/Pinterest site

Tag - a restaurant site

Let me know who you think has a great web/blog/social site.
